In 1988, Congress passed United States Public Law 100-322, Section 204. This legislation authorized the establishment of nonprofit research corporations affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers. This authority was expanded to include the support of VA’s education mission. The research nonprofits are not owned or controlled by the Federal Government, separate entities.
The Augusta Biomedical Research Corporation (ABRC) was established in 1989, providing a flexible funding mechanism for the administration of private and public grants to support the research and education programs at the VA Augusta Health Care System.
ABRC is an independent, state chartered, charitable organization and is a federal tax-exempt 501c3 organization under the designation of the Internal Revenue Service.
ABRC abides by all state and federal rules and regulations.
The sole purpose of the Augusta Biomedical Research Corporation (ABRC) is to advance the research and education missions of the Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically at the VA Augusta Health Care System, through the support of research and education - related activities.
